Murmurations is a graphic composition created for Scorebook for Democracy Sessions, a publication commissioned by MOCA and Wild Up as part of Democracy Sessions, taking place November 8–10, 2024. This three-day event—held in the wake of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election—brings together artists, composers, and audiences to reimagine democratic and cooperative practices through sound, performance, and collective gathering.
Presented as an open, participatory format, Democracy Sessions invites creative experimentation, public rehearsal, and blurred boundaries between performers and audience. Murmurations contributes to this spirit by offering a score that echoes the fluid, emergent order of flocking birds—suggesting forms of collective movement, mutual attunement, and adaptive listening.
The Scorebook includes works by Rachel Beetz, Elizabeth Cline, inti figgis-vizueta, Harmony Holiday, Michael Ned Holte, Sharon Chohi Kim, Elana Mann, Odeya Nini, Lewis Pesacov, Chana Porter, Sarah Rara, Christopher Rountree, Patrick Shiroishi, and M.A. Tiesenga.
